Why You Should Try Out for a School Sport this Spring Season

Jack DeGaudenzi

Spring is a popular season for students to participate in sports. Should you try out for a team this upcoming spring?

Playing a sport can have positive effects throughout the rest of your life. A team sport requires cooperation and good communication skills. Teammates need to work together in order to win. Effective communication is the best way to solve problems and is a skill you will always need. Following directions from a coach can prepare you for taking orders from a boss. Sports require you to think on your feet – to take an objective given by a coach and execute it despite all obstacles.

There are many life lessons that can be learned from playing sports. Anything you want to excel in needs time, practice, dedication and discipline. You may think that the amount of time you spend playing sports will conflict with or distract you from your studies. It is in fact the opposite. Studies show that playing sports causes students to manage their time more effectively. Playing sports will also help you be more fit and healthy and help boost your self-esteem. It is also a great way to make new friends.

If you’ve been cut from a team in the past, but you still love the sport, keep practicing and trying. Some people will have to worker harder than others in order to make a team, but that should not stop anyone. Should you try out for a sport? You have nothing to lose, but look at all you have to gain.
