After 82 games, 36 game winners, improbable upsets, and unbelievable highlights and dunks that have rattled social media, 16 out of 30 teams remained to begin their quest to compete for a championship last weekend.

The Golden State Warriors, the defending champions and the 2nd seed of the west, began their road to another NBA championship with a dominating 26 point win over the 7th seeded San Antonio Spurs.  The Spurs have been missing their key All-Star, Kawhi Leonard, who could possibly turn the tides of the series if he returns.

Upsets were in the balance as well in the wild, wild, west, as the 6th seeded New Orleans Pelicans upset the 3rd seed Portland Trail Blazers in a thriller.  However, the 4th seeds Oklahoma City Thunder ousted the Utah Jazz and the 1st seeded Houston Rockets held off the Minnesota Timberwolves, the 8th seed.

Meanwhile, in the East, the defending eastern conference champions for 3 years, the Cleveland Cavaliers, fell in Game 1 against the Victor Oladipo-led Indiana Pacers.  The Toronto Raptors, Boston Celtics, and the Philadelphia 76ers were all able to hold off their respective lower-seeded opponents.

BPI (Basketball Power Index) is a statistical analyzer that predicts an opponent’s win percentage for the NBA title.  Although the Warriors are favorites, BPI favors the Houston Rockets to win the whole thing.  It is up to the play of the Rockets to carry out such aspirations.
