Destroying of Forests Leading to Animals Becoming Endangered and Losing Homes

         Unfortunately, in our world today, the lack of proper management of the environment has been a huge issue, and has led to the decimation of environments and the species that live there. Many forests, such as the Amazon, have been severely damaged, causing the endangerment of many species residing in those environments. One major factor in destroying such vital forest is the process of human industrial, such as the building of highways through the Amazon, and the creation of more transportation grids through the Borneo Forest in Indonesia. Researchers have found that the square mileage of the forests has significantly decreased since the general period of human industrialization and the transition towards more reliance on technology. 

       A recent came up with many speculations as to why many species have recently been more prone to the downfall associated with the forest, and how these species have become so much more vulnerable, considering how resilient they used to be. However, the study expresses the fact that those species that have been in a stable habitat for a longer peirod of time, are actually more sensitive to the change of their environment, and are more prone towards becoming endangered. 

     One factor that scientists found leading to a greater endangerement of species in forests was when forests were fragmented, and seperated into certain regions. This can cause the species to be cut off from their food resources, and will lead the species towards starvation and isolation, and they will not be able to sustaiin themselves properly. Cristina Banks-Leite, a biologist at Imperial College London conducted a study taking thousands of birds from the forest of Brazil. Leite found that there was a significant reduction of the amount of birds in these certain regions, and even less birds towards the edges of the fragments of the forest, Leite saying that the new borders caused the birds to die having a lack of food, or the proper environment. Moreover, birds in Brazil’s tropical forests tend to not fly, since the tropical forest was always dim, and the exposure to harsh sunlight when flying would be too extreme for the birds. 

            Taking thousands series of species, such as species of birds, mammals, spiders, and other animals, researchers also believed that the reasoning for endangerment of only certain species had to with the experiences the species faced in the past, an idea known as the extinction filter hypothesis, in which a species that could not cope with a threat in the past now become extinct, as if to filter them out. 

        Unfortunately, the authors of the study still believe that extinction will continue to occur in the forest fragments, as long as forests are continuing to be destroyed by industrialization and commercialization. Many researchers are emphasizing the importance of peserving forest fragments, and to prevent fragmentation. Many researchers are trying to prevent the building of railways and roads through the Borneo forest in Indonesia, with the fear that this level of fragmentation could be detrimental and extremely catostrophic to certain species, such as the sun bear. 

           Although the entire situation is quite saddening, preventative measures can be taken, and truly need to be taken, before many precious and vital species will cease to exist.
