National Drug Facts Week is coming back to Manhasset from Monday, January 26th, 2015 through Sunday, February 1st, 2015! During this week, high schools across America will come together with their community and crack myths about drugs and drug abuse by speaking to actual scientists and professionals to learn the science behind the fact.

Why do we celebrate National Drug Facts Week? Well, by the 8th grade, 28% of kids have consumed alcohol, 15% have smoked cigarettes, 16.5% have smoked marijuana, and about 1 out of every 3 high school seniors report using an illicit drug in the past year. As of 2007, among young adults, 16.4% use marijuana, 60% use prescription-type drugs non-medically, 1.7% use cocaine, and 1.5% use hallucinogens; these rates are increasing every year.

Annually in the United States, about 570,000 people die due to drug abuse: 440,000 from tobacco-related diseases, 85,000 due to alcohol abuse, 20,000 from illegal drugs, and 20,000 due to prescription drug abuse. This needs to end. Teens that continue to learn about the risks of drugs from their parents, teachers, doctors, or scientists are up to 50% less likely to use drugs than those who don’t.

In Manhasset, 35% of 12th grade students and 27% of 10th grade students do not think people risk harming themselves physically or in other ways when having five or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage once or twice week. And when it comes to smoking marijuana once or twice a week, 50.2% of 12th grade students and 33.3% of 10th grade students think people do not risk harming themselves physically or in other ways. Another addition to drug awareness at Manhasset is an event on Thursday, January 29th sponsored by CASA
